Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cell or Marrow Stromal Cells (Mscs).
At MDS, we prepare customized and well characterized adult stem cells referred to as non-hematopoietic mesenchymal stem cells, or marrow stromal cells (MSCs) of human, rats and mice. The cells are readily isolated, expanded in culture, and genetically engineered. Adult tissues and organs that contain stem cells:
- Brain stem cells can differentiate into astrocytes, neurons and oligodendrocytes
- Bone marrows can differentiate into white and red blood cells and platelets.
- Endotheliums have stem cells that differentiate into blood vessels and cardiomyocytes.
- Skeletal muscle has stem cells that mediate muscle growth and may proliferate in response to injury and exercise.
- Skin stem cells may replace and repair damaged skin. They are associated with epithelial, epidermal and hair follicle cells and also the basal layer of the epidermis.
- GI tract has stem cells located in intestinal crypts that help renew the epithelial lining of the intestinal tract.
- Pancreas has stem cells that can help regenerate beta pancreatic insulin producing cells.
- Liver- bone marrow stem cells may repair liver damage, but damage is mostly repaired with hepatocytes (liver cells) themselves.
- Retina stem cells are being studied to repair damage from retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration. More
